At Nordic Morning I have been lucky to work with very different types of clients, one of the ADB Safegate. A global company offering airport solutions to all parts of the world, they are a very interesting B2B company to work with. ADB Safegate wanted to create an extranet solution for serving their business partners better, so we stepped in to help out.

My role in this project has been user research, UX design and usability testing. I interviewed business partners based in different countries to find out what kind of needs they have. From those findings we proceeded to have small internal design sprints to ideate how the extranet could look. The ideas created went into a clickable wireframe that was then tested by running remote user testing, again with users from several countries. A final MVP was created from those results, and that solution is currently in development and hopefully released during this year.

The main challenge has been managing user expectations while keeping the client happy. There were many technical difficulties in the solution, which put some limitations in the functionalities. The level of expectations from the stakeholders is very different and coming up with solutions that would satisfy both parties, and be feasible seemed very difficult. We mapped all the possible functionalities discussed, and gave each of them a rating for business value, user value and complexity of implementation. This way we could discuss ways to move forward, to reach an MVP solution that would bring value to all parties.

TL;DR. In case you didn’t read that, here’s a summary: I have been working with ADB Safegate in creating an extranet solution that serves their international network of business partners. I conducted user interviews, designed solutions, did user testing and am currently looking over the developer's shoulders as they implement the extranet.

Things learned from this project:

  • I spent a lot of time listening to the business partner's concerns - people will open up to you if you ask them to
  • Managing expectations is very important, and if in danger of falling short, provide your users a way to get in contact to give feedback
  • When overwhelmed with a list of possible functionalities, prioritise from different perspectives
